Right now, youth is king !

This is a part of Van Halen's "Right Now" lyrics and this week it crossed my mind a few times. Teenaging, mostly...

1) I came from vacations and worked three days, which reminded me of the school days, when there was little to be done;
2) I went to a (really really great) concert in the middle of the week, the day before I went back to work;
3) I played football on my first day at work, after hours... just like back then;
4) I stayed up to 3am on friday night at a friends' house, talking about everything and anything, after I fixed their computer;
5) I went to the beach today, because I wanted to... I really enjoyed playing ball on the sand.

I don't think I'd wish being a teenager again, but I do wish I had the time to do everything I could do then.

Duh! What else is new ?...

Voicing... (pt.1)

I'm trying to sing more.
I'll try to learn how to make my voice sound better. I don't get out of tune but I still don't like to hear my voice alone. But I want more than backing vocals.

We shall see what this leads to.

Yesternight... Pearl Jam !!!

I decided awhile ago not to attend any of the Pearl Jam 2006 concerts. The last time in Restelo was only so-so and I still haven't inspected their most recent album.

Yet, both nights were sold-outs.

At the last minute, a friend's friend had to sell his ticket as he couldn't make and I decided to give it a go. mike, stone, jeff, eddie & matt It was my last day of vacations and what a way to have it.

I was sensing a different feeling of nostalgia, still remembering the Cascais show some 10 years ago... and then, it was the best ever concert for me... 110% pure energy, Eddie diving over the audience, everything happened that night (they even appeared supprting the first act and disguised as special guests).

But now, a different story alltogether.

Setlist:
Severed Hand, Corduroy, Hail Hail, Save You, World Wide Suicide, Dissident, Even Flow, Army Reserve, Whipping, State Of Love And Trust, I Got Id, Garden, Do The Evolution, Sad, Daughter (It's Ok), Insignificance, Black, Rearviewmirror
Encore 1:
(Improvisation over "Portugal, Portugal"), Come Back, I Believe In Miracles, Big Wave, Once, Footsteps, Alive
Encore 2:
Wasted (reprise), Better Man, Smile, Why Go, Rockin' In The Free World, Yellow Ledbetter

The set begins with the presentation of the band's most recent album (and last?), and then flows beautifully at full pace, but in a very different fashion from the night before. That's obvious, as a respectable percentage of the audience was there for both concerts.

So far, I've heard/read that the second night was a little better, in terms of repertoire and its balance. The addition on "State of Love And Trust", the crowd singing so high that Eddie would simply take a step back and play the guitar while enjoying, the offering of a cavaquinho, the tidbit of Jimi Hendrix' "Little Wing" in the middle of the "Yellow Ledbetter" guitar solo, the playing of Neil Young's classic "Rockin' In The Free World" with all the lights on, Eddie talking in portuguese (even if he had to read it)... and of course, the energy put into every milisecond of the show.

rocking for a free world...

For me, Eddie and Mike were perfect. They are somehow in a bigger spotlight than the rest of the guys and they accept that role without overshaddowing them. Eddie is rarely (only) singing... he's always performing, ergo giving his all. Mike is thin (I had seen him on TV and mags, but live confirmation meant something) and his energy is always a big plus, as much as his playing. What to say about Matt?... Everything one could say is an understatement as the man plays like hell and still has that Soundgarden low profile approach. Jeff was Jeff and Stone was Stone... in their (own) worlds, focused and 101% symbiotic with the rest of the guys.

My personal notes:
- few noticed that the first act entered the stage to the (recorded) sound of Van Halen's "Eruption", the classic 1978 Edward Van Halen solo;
- lucky me I didn't have to listen to "Last Kiss" again... I can't seem to like it or maybe I'm just fed up with it;
- lucky me I got to see them performing "Once", definately one of my favorite songs along with "Light Years" (which I obviously wished they could/would play);
- lucky me I saw them in each of their portuguese travels...
- there seems to be the doubt if the band will retire after this tour; recent interviews and the band's atitude seem to lead us into that, and of course Eddie saying "...we haven't played this song since Cascais 96 and we want to play it one last time in Portugal..." and his goodbye: "...see you in a better world !..."; hope they keep on rocking for a long long time;
- unlucky me that didn't get to see/hear them playing "Jeremy", "Elderly Woman...", "Why Go", "Wishlist", "I Am Mine" and "Life Wasted";
- stupid me, I should have attended both shows !!!

A Year To The Day

A year to the day, I started working where I work now. Well, not right now, as it's my last day of vacations. There's a chance I'm attending the Pearl Jam concert later today... what a way to end the vacations time !!!

The post title is also one of the songs I like from "Van Halen 3". Here goes its full lyrics:

"I woke up to yet another day
Grown to expect, expect more of the same
Except for, for a subtle change
And that is, I'm slowly fading away

Harvest moon, soon will pass
Crop is gone, left only chaff
A bitter pill, and an overcast
A flag unfurled, at half mast
Ahhhhh...

A year to the day
Since you went away
A moment in time
When you were last mine
I'm here standing still
Yeah! With more time to kill
Hey! I barely survived
Yeah, I barely survived

Like pouring salt on an open wound
Memory filling, filling this empty room
I'm as bare, I'm as bare, as a barren womb
Still like the air, in a whitewash tomb
Ahhhhh...

A year to the day
Since you went away
A moment in time
When you were last mine
I'm here standing still
Hey! With more time to kill
I barely survived
Yes, I barely survived

A year to the day!
Year to the day!
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
A year to the day!
Three sixty-five!
Three sixty-five, five, fiiive!
Ahhhhh...

About this song, in their 1998 tour, Eddie's solo would begin in the middle of it, when he hits that artificial harmonic before the second chorus... instead of the chorus, the band would leave (for a beer, I suppose) while EVH would do "his" thing.

This song had a tentative title of "365" but was changed in the last minute. I still like that album although it seems that I'm alone in that regards. "Once", "From Afar" and "Without You" are my favorites.

Yesterday's message emphasis

I just wanted to put some emphasis on yesterday's message. It's about a dear friend's daughter wedding. Thus meaning it is about someone we hold very dear. Very dear.

"Dear you,
We're not absent, yet we're present
And it's true,
We're not there, we're here

But you,
You know by now where we stand
Us two,
From afar, friends at hand
".

Wedding bells for Alex...

Dear Alex, this is YOUR day.
There's no other way of putting it, no advice to give, nothing but the convincing wish (and prayer to go along) that the best is yet to come.

I'm sure your mom (one of my favorite persons in the planet, as you know) has provided the input you need (and may choose, or not, to follow) not only with her words but also with her experience and the reflections of her actions in life.

I'm sure you know I'm with you today.
It's only a presence in thought, but I'm sure you know how we feel about you. We sure hope to be with you soon and, like in 2004, we hope to have you with us again, for you know that you have a second home here with us.

More than "happy trails", our biggest hug. Biiiiggest hug... and in case I didn't mentioned it before: "Biggest hug !!!"
